At Elmwood Cemetery at 2:00 pm, historian Elise Guyette, will visit the graves of some of Burlington’s Black citizens, including those who were Revolutionary War Veterans and some who provided safe harbor to those seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad. A few served powerful people as servants and laborers, while others were skilled barbers, cooks, nurses, and homemakers. All were buried in the northern half of the cemetery, which was segregated at the time it was built. Elise’s research brings to light new facets on a plot more noted for North End notables, such as Frances (Fanny) Allen and John Norton Pomeroy.

Join Preservation Burlington and the Vermont Humanities Council for a unique presentation on theater curtains in Vermont! Between 1880 and World War II, painted theater curtains were artistic features of most New England villages and towns. In Vermont, painted curtains graced stages in town and grange halls, opera houses, and community theaters. A culture of local variety shows and traveling, professional talent flourished in front of those curtains in some very remote Vermont communities.
In a tour of some of the 177 curtains in Vermont, Christine Hadsel, director of Curtains Without Borders, provides a glimpse into the world of talented and often sophisticated artists who were part of the rural cultural scene, illustrating the rich cultural history of small-town Vermont before World War I.
